Sherman Filterbank This is my personal pick of the show. Often when I'm trying to get some piece of equipment to make a particular sound I find myself wishing that the knobs or parameters would allow me to go a little lower or a little higher than they had been designed to go. That will NEVER be a problem with this unit. This is an analog filter can take the most mundane of source inputs and turn out some of the most unusual and extreme twists of audio I've ever heard. I've played with a number of other filter devices and none come close to the sort of audio gymnastics this one has to offer. This unit also has a wonderfully complete MIDI implementation that has features for live performance as well as sequencer-based studio programmers. |

Pefftronics I've been impressed by the Pefftronics products since I saw the RTSP prototype at the 96 NAMM show. They've got devices that introduce a random shift in the delay time that lets their boxes do things that others can't. The chorusing sounds much more natural than a typical chorus circuit and it really makes the instrument sound more present. They also had a prototype for their new analog delay which sounded great too. Pefftronics |
JoMox AiR Base 99 The Air Base 99 is the rack mount version of the very hip analog drum machine the XBase 09. It's really quite a bit more than a repackaging of the table top unit, it's quite a move forward. It contains all of the analog sound generators (plus a new tom section) but also has samples lovingly captured in 8 bit ROM which are then routed through and analog VCA envelope. The MIDI implementation is extreme and allows you to control virtually any internal parameter via MIDI. You might remember seeing the SUNSYN from these guys on last years Oddities web, well it's just about ready for release. JoMoX El. Musikinstrumente GmbH |
The Audio Toolbox If you know one of those engineers who have everything, you can buy them one of these and they can throw away a significant portion of their "everything". This little baby covers all the bases, it's an acoustic analysis tool, a audio function generator, a time code calculator, a MIDI diagnostics tool, a cable tester, a guitar tuner, a headphone amp, and, a hand held video game. This thing does it all. TerraSonde |
FwS effectors by DACS These guys have a line of very cool rack mount ring modulators. Aside from sounding great and having the ability to seriously rip up any signal fed into them, they have the coolest looking front panels I've ever seen. The indicator LEDs are behind the panel and when lit, glow through the multi-colored face. Independent Audio |
AccuVerb tube preamp/spring reverb I know what you're thinking, "a spring reverb?!?". Well that what I thought until I heard it. It was surprisingly pleasant an natural sounding. Through the mic and headphones they had set up I was able to play with it a bit. This would be a great reverb for those times when you really need the reverb to occupy some space in the mix. AET NanoStudio We're getting pretty close to putting a studio in your pocket. This little 8.4" x 4.8" x 1.4" device is a Windows98 PC with a touch screen. It's got a 1.6gb drive, 32mb RAM, 2 stereo & 2 mic inputs, 2 stereo & 1 S/PDIF outputs, MIDI in and out, 4mb GM/GS wavetable ROM, and a 32 voice EMU synthesizer. AET |
