Whitney Drums What you see here is the Penguin Series of drums from Whitney. They build them like this to give them increased volume without making the drum much larger. It also lets the drum resonate more freely. Whitney Drums |
Peavey Radial Drums Not to be outdone, Peavey also showed a unique drum shell. Only they set it up with this ridiculous automatic drum beater. They had an expensive plasma display above these two drums that was supposed to look like it was showing you a real-time FFT display of each drum. Peavey Electronics Corporation |
Metro Pad These are practice pads that can teach you how to play as well. They've got built-in metronomes and flashing lights to cue you as to which pad to hit. They also have one to teach you how to play congas. Educational Music Accessories Company |
Bead Brains A new twist on the egg shaker is the Bead Brain. Not only does it work as a shaker but you can use your thumb to open the spring-loaded jaw and let it snap to the beat. As their literature says "Too weird to put down". On The Wall Productions |
Thunder Tubes Like the name says, the Thunder tubes emit a thunder-like sound when you shake them. You might have seen the Blue Man Group use these. I think it's a record, three products from one company make the NAMM Oddities pages. Along with the Bead Brains (above) On the Wall also makes the Zydeco Ties featured on the "You Figure It Out" page. On The Wall Productions |
Brazil Cuica Here's a jumbo size Cuica complete with a horn to make it even louder. You can see the passerby wondering where the hell that weird noise was coming from. Spanway Imports |
Udu Guiro Drum This is a unique combination of a ceramic Udu drum and a Guiro. Between the drum head, the hole on top, and the ribbed guiro, this drum offers a number of playing options. Rhythms |
Big Gong Another staple in the NAMM Oddities are the really big instruments. This years entry is a gong that's nearly six feet in diameter. |

Don't be surprised if you find that the product or the company you see
on these pages has ceased to exist, particularly as the pages get older.
One function of the NAMM Oddities is that of a historical archive of
attempted products. These web pages are not associated with or sponsored by NAMM |
